Fiber Optic Power Loss Budget - FTI Packages

FTI Packages 2014-04-03

With the FTI Packages,  the link attenuation (Optical Power Loss) must be calculated for each fiber cabling run.

Allowable loss:

  • Connector : 0.75 dB
  • Splice : 0.3 dB
  • Cable @ 850nm : 3.5 db / km
  • Cable @ 1300nm : 1.5 dB / km

Assuming a 50 meter link had two connectors & a splice. We decide to measure at 1300 nm, the affordable power loss budget would be calculated in the following way:

Mated Connector0.75 dB
Cable @ 1300nm0.075 dB (1.5 dB / km)
Splice0.3 dB
Mated Connector0.75 dB
Power Loss Budget1.875 dB

Summary: Do not accept a Power Loss Reading without a calculated Power Loss Budget.  For certification to ANSI/TIA/EIA 568-B, ISO/IEC 11801 and EN50173, you must test at both wavelengths in one direction and record the allowable loss budget.  **Learn About:
